Economy Jakarta

Economy
Jakarta is the country’s economic centre. It counts a population of over 9,000,000. It is the city with the largest amount of people in Indonesia and in Southeast.  The city is the seat of the ASEAN Secretariat. Jakarta counts different airports and is connected by several commuter railways and bus lines.
Jakarta’s economy depends highly on service sectors, including financial, banking and trading sector. The biggest sectors contributing to the economic growth right now are ownerships and business services ( 29%), trade, hotel and restaurant sector (20%), and manufacturing industry sector (16%).
As a result of fast development in economy between 1960-1995 the city attracted more and more people from other places of Indonesia. Which led to a lot of immigrants in Jakarta. Because of that Jakarta is parted into three sections, one is the old town at North Jakarta with Chinese, Javanese and Arabian people. Second is central Jakarta with high rise building and modern life, good garden and vibrant super markets or shopping malls and government offices. And the third is modern resident and beautiful garden at the south of Jakarta. Then on the outsides of Jakarta there are parts where more poorer people live in less favorable facilities.
In 2008 there was a worldwide financial crisis which also hit Jakarta.  The Jakarta Stock Exchange lost more than half of its value between June and October 2008. The global demand for manufactured goods and export industries decreased heavily leading to job losses especially to subcontracted, casual and temporary workers. This in turn resulted in further expansion of the informal economy, which is said to account for seventy per cent of workers in Indonesia. The economy of Jakarta appears to have survived the global crisis quite well, with an economic growth rate at 4.5 percent in 2009.
Businessman Chairul Tanjung, chairman of National Economic Committee, predicts a bright future for Jakarta. He says that by 2030, Indonesia, will become the fifth largest economy in the world.
